The City Barge – This Thames-side pub recently reopened after a refurb and the new menu and terrace tables are already proving a hit with the locals. Head west for a riverside roast or weekend brunch.

Bilbao Berria – The Basque pintxo bar chain has opened its first London restaurant, with help from MasterChef: The Professionals winner Ash Mair. Perch at the bar or head downstairs to the stylish dining room and snack on jamon Iberico, Galician octopus, and Pedro Ximenez braised beef cheeks.

Ham Yard Bar & Restaurant  – Impress your fussiest foodie friends with brunch, cocktails or dinner at the stunning new Ham Yard Hotel in Soho. The bar serves delicious meatball sliders and at just £18 per person, their afternoon tea is a West End bargain that’s hard to beat.

The Fish & Chip Shop – On busy Upper Street, the super fresh seafood and slick service help this British fish bar stand out from the crowd. Try the Camden Hells battered cod or the shrimp burger with spicy tartare sauce, but save room for Eton Mess or a scoop of their zingy gin and tonic sorbet.

Hoxley & Porter – With an Art Deco dining carriage at the front and a dimly lit drinking den at the back, this Islington gem is perfect for date night or an evening of cocktail sipping.

Clouds & Soil – At this recently revamped Edinburgh townhouse, you’ll find a space for every occasion. There’s a ground floor wine and cocktail bar, lots of private event space, and a handsome first floor dining room with a modern European menu and views over Carlton Hill.

Hutchesons – Spread over three floors of an A-listed building in Glasgow, Hutchesons café, bar and brasserie is open all day, seven days a week. Go for breakfast, drop in for a glass of Champagne after work, or try sizeable steaks and Scottish seafood for lunch or dinner.

Grillado – If you’re hungry in Salisbury, head for this family-friendly Italian restaurant and try their famous rotisserie chicken, simply grilled fish and steaks, or traditional pizzas and pastas.
