Go green at these vegan-friendly restaurants in Manchester

Whether you’re a full time vegan or just giving it a try, you’re going to love the plant-based plates at these Manchester restaurants.

Black Leaf & Alvarium
At this garden-themed cocktail bar and kitchen, head chef Grace Stubbs serves plant-based tapas dishes from 5pm and a show-stopping vegan Wellington every Sunday. The subterranean restaurant is a relaxed spot to catch up with friends while you tuck into oyster mushroom ‘calamari’ and chickpea meatballs in spicy tomato sauce.

This vegan diner is a hot spot for vegans in Manchester. Proving vegan food is more than just salad, their menu is a celebration of plant-based comfort food. Round up some mates and tuck into (meat-free) burgers, mac ‘n’ cheez, seitan hot dogs, and loaded fries.

This vegan pizza chain started out in Brighton and proved an instant hit when it opened in the Northern Quarter in 2021. If you’re a recent vegan convert, you’ll love the plant-based mozzarella which tastes and melts just like real dairy. Choose from wholegrain, hemp, or gluten-free bases topped with everything from truffled mushrooms to BBQ pulled porketta.

What The Pitta
When the kebab craving strikes, head to What The Pitta for their award-winning vegan doner. With spiced soya pieces, salad, tzatziki, and homemade hummus wrapped in freshly made bread, it’s just as tasty as the real deal.

Frost Burgers
This laid-back street food joint takes their burgers to the next level with homemade sauces and carefully sourced plant-based meats and cheeses. The menu ticks all the comfort food boxes with beef-free and chicken-free burgers, curly fries, craft beers, and dairy-free shakes. Try the fruity Tropical Freeze or the Ultimate Biscoff topped with whipped cream and crushed Biscoff cookies.

FoodWell in Salford is inspired by the California eateries that are popular with health-conscious foodies in LA. In fact, FoodWell is more than a restaurant – they also have a wellness studio and a deli counter so you can grab healthy food on the go. Visit at the weekend and catch up with friends over Mimosas and a full vegan breakfast.

Now with three sites to choose from (First Street, Cross Street, and Media City), Vertigo is one of Manchester’s top spots for vegan food. They’re open from breakfast through to dinner serving pastries, salads, sandwiches, and dishes like jackfruit chilli and supergreen mac ‘n’ cheese.

Albert’s Shed
With its picturesque location at the centre of the Castlefield canal basin, Albert’s Shed is the ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Manchester’s city centre. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine and there’s a separate vegan menu for lovers of plant-based food. Save room for the dark chocolate torte with vegan vanilla ice-cream.

Spice things up with Indian street food and craft beers at Bundobust where the largely vegan menu shows just how delicious a plant-based meal can be. The long communal tables and funky orange booths are perfect for groups, so bring your friends and come hungry. Those okra fries aren’t going to eat themselves…

The Allotment
After a day out in Manchester’s city centre, head to The Allotment to satisfy your vegan food cravings. This popular eatery is entirely plant-based and gluten-free and the relaxed atmosphere will make you feel right at home. Choose from small plates, sharing boards, and hearty classics like chestnut and mushroom bourguignon or fish and chips made with battered banana blossom.

The Remedy Kitchen
At The Remedy Kitchen, health-conscious diners can enjoy naturally nourishing food that’s free from gluten, dairy, and refined sugar. Start your day with a healthy breakfast or pop in at lunch for a salad, smoothie, or a satay chickpea Buddha bowl.

Acclaimed TV chef Simon Rimmer showcases fresh, inventive vegetarian (and vegan) dishes at his restaurant in Didsbury. You’ll find plenty of vegan options on the menu and the restaurant’s long list of awards proves that this is a gem to be treasured.

The Deaf Institute
Whether you’re seeing a band or just grabbing a few drinks, this three-storey bar and music venue is a great place to hang out with friends. Inspired by the Northern music scene, kitchen residency This Charming Naan serves vegan Indian street food dishes. Try the crispy cauliflower wings and curries like ‘Girlfriend in a Korma’ or ‘Madras is Murder’.
