The Week in Food

St Nicholas Fayre
‘Tis the season for Christmas fairs and Christmas markets to sprinkle themselves all over the countryside like raisins in a Christmas cake.  One of the oldest, best established and most loved Christmas fairs of all is York’s St Nicholas Fayre, 24 – 27 November, a brilliant beginning to the true Christmas season.  There are gifts and crafts, of course, but we’re particularly interested in the local game and produce and foods made to traditional, regional recipes.  The traders all dress in Victorian costumes, seasonal music and aromas fill the air, and as the evening draws in early and the twinkling lights come into play, there’s no place we’d rather be.  Though if we were a dependent minor, we’d be campaigning hard for a trip through the Choccy and Sweetie Tour on the Saturday.  Plan to be tired at the end of the day and in need of proper nourishment: book one of toptable’s terrific York restaurants and you’ll be ahead of the game.
Cocktails and Fragrances at Les Senteurs
We love it when something new comes along.  Our friends at The Cocktail Lovers have teamed up with specialist perfumerie Les Senteurs for a Cocktails and Fragrances evening this Thursday, 24 November.  The idea is this: the mixing and ingredients that go into making great perfumes bear some resemblance to the mixing and ingredients that go into making great cocktails.  And what could be more glamorous than scent and cocktails?   Mini cocktails will be served based on the fragrances featured during the evening and there will be an opportunity to create your own, bespoke cocktail.  Sounds like a blast, as well as an opportunity to pick up some fine perfumes for the ladies on our gift list.
As always, we’re ready to recommend restaurants nearby for a late supper after the sip’n’smell event.
Sicilian Month at Refettorio
Already underway, Sicilian Month at Giorgio Locatelli’s fab Refettorio restaurant in the City celebrates the publication of the chef’s latest cookbook Made in Italy.  Top diner rated Refettorio is already a totpable favourite for its modern take on traditional Italian cuisine served in a smart, laid-back atmosphere, so having another reason to check in there suits us fine.  The special Sicilian menu will be on through 10 December.
But for truffle fans, the white truffle menu — through December — is the real reason to make a booking for Refettorio, and to prepare for culinary bliss.
Jazz for Free
The Brompton Bar and Grill in Kensington is delighted to host jazz and blues singer TJ Johnson this Friday evening from 10pm — free admission to diners.  He and his band have graced the stage at hugely respected rooms  like Ronnie Scott’s and Boisdale’s Canary Wharf.  Grab the opportunity to hear these amazing musicians and their transcendant music crossing the boundaries of  jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel in a more intimate space.  This will be special indeed.  To tempt you even more, the Brompton Bar and Grill has a terrific special offer on now through the end of December.  You just can’t lose.
