If the serious business has fallen to you of planning the Christmas party for your company, office, team, club, school, ward, diocese or whatever group you call your own, the first question – or the first question after budget – is one of style.
It all boils down to this: trad or mad?
Naturally, being toptable, we’re bursting with helpful suggestions in all budget ranges for both traditional Christmas parties with all the trimmings or for holiday bashes with a big helping of something different.
If the season has got you yearning for a real Christmas party with crackers and decorations and party hats, hotel dining rooms are a clever spot to begin. Cheneston’s at The Milestone Hotel in Kensington, for instance, has beautifully-decorated spaces for groups from 6 to 40 for meals and up to 60 for cocktails, and the Festive Menu does include the party bits. The Athenaeum restaurant at the five-star Athenaeum Hotel on Piccadilly is another smartly luxurious spot for festive meals and parties, as are the Artisan at the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair and the stunning Apsleys – a Heinz Beck Restaurant at the Lanesborough on Hyde Park Corner.
But you can find traditional elegance at stand-alone restaurants with great style, like the gorgeous St Pancras Grand, the Coq d’Argent and 1 Lombard Street in the City of London.
If it’s more modern chic you’re craving for your crowd, you could consider Patterson’s in Mayfair, Hush near Bond Street, or The Heights at St Georges Hotel near the BBC with its glorious rooftop views.
Getting people out of their rut always guarantees a good party. Agree? Then you should definitely consider booking one of the groovy pods at Cocoon in St James’s for groups up to 10 people. At Gilgamesh in Camden it always feels like a party’s about to break out and the epic Babylonian décor is a hoot.
Christmas in a souk sound good? Levant near Oxford Street absolutely transports you to the north of Africa through its sensual décor and exotic Lebanese cuisine.
Or toast the season with sake and shochu at the superbly stylish Sake No Hana – brought to you by Alan Yau of Hakkasan and Yauatcha – though early booking is advised.
The Grandstand Restaurant at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium goes with a night at the races for a really special outing. The All Star Lanes in Bloomsbury will get everyone on their feet and bowling. And if it’s a river view you crave, The Yacht on Victoria Embankment is a smart, exclusive spot with half a dozen spaces to accommodate parties of many sizes and make your party unforgettable.
