In Coggeshall, Essex, Baumanns Brasserie could easily fit into both categories – it’s creative and comforting and has a terrific special offer of 25% off the Christmas menu for groups of 10 or more.
At Burnham-on-Crouch, the charming The Contented Sole restaurant – current winner of the Best Small Restaurant in Essex – is offering a four-bird roast for tradition-lovers.
Barnacles restaurant in Hinckley is a traditional restaurant in attractive grounds overlooking a pretty lake that usually specialises in fish but also offers turkey and trimmings for the Christmas season.
Langar Hall restaurant is at the end of an avenue of lime trees in historic country house hotel Langar Hall.  The setting couldn’t be more traditional and perfect for the season.

Chapel House Restaurant

Chapel House restaurant is an award-winning restaurant with rooms in charming Atherstone that’s a traditional haven of good food and fine wine.

English House in Lichfield is a different kind of traditional – trad menu with more modern décor in an historic building with an open plan kitchen.  Though the Christmas special offer of two courses for £19.95 does include party poppers, crackers, Christmas card and voucher.
Stones restaurant in Matlock is another new traditional – stylish décor, tucked away in a sweet touristy town with a menu that ticks all the boxes: turkey, pudding, glass of fizz on arrival.

Cockliffe Country House Restaurant

Cockliffe Country House Restaurant outside Nottingham is set in idyllic surroundings and offers a gorgeous traditional feast.

London Darbar

Okay, London Darbar is just barely in Essex, but it’s a heck of a spot for all kinds of party naughtiness with a choice of Indian, Mexican, continental or Oriental menus, live entertainment and great interior.
In Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, The Dining Room at The Grosvenor Casino is a terrific place to combine play with partying.  Take the gang for a flutter then celebrate together.
The Boathouse in Ely has views of the River Ouse and a British menu with a unique European twist.  It’s a runner-up for the toptable Best for Parties award this year.
The Galleria in Cambridge has magical river views, too, especially from its lower dining room with space for ten.

Restaurant Alimentum

There’s no turkey at all on the menu at Restaurant Alimentum in Cambridge, where Mark Poynton’s sexy dining room and amazing cuisine has won it a place among the UK’s 60 Best Restaurants according to the Good Food Guide.
Madeira a Vista in Leicester is a vibrant Portuguese restaurant with a pair of great-value Christmas menus with all the warmth of the Iberian peninsula.
An award-winning gastropub Christmas (50 Best Gastropubs, Independent) in an historic coaching inn with non-trad menu and out-of-town charm, the Collyweston Slater isn’t quite mad but it’s definitely out of the ordinary.
