Cheap Meals Out

We thought that might catch your eye.  When we say ‘cheap meals out’ we’re not talking about squat’n’gobble fast food and chips — though to be fair, sometimes fast food and chips is exactly what we crave.  No, we’re talking about good food in nice restaurants, but inexpensive.  There are a few absolutely terrific deals on right now and we want to be sure you know about them so you can book and dine for less.

Le Café Anglais

Le Café Anglais is a beautiful restaurant in London’s Queensway with wonderful chef Rowley Leigh at the helm.  Literally at the helm, as you’ll often see him in the open-ish kitchen when you’re dining, even during weekday lunch.  Now through 18 June you can dine there any day for lunch or supper for just £15 for two courses and a glass of wine.  The menu is a limited, but very nice, table d’hote menu, and you dine in the Oyster Bar area which is in the same room as the main dining room, but just over the banquette and without white tablecloths, so it’s a bit more chilled.  Excellent food and lovely surroundings.

Zucca in Edinburgh

At Zucca Restaurant and Café in Edinburgh you can dine well at lunch for just £9.95 for two courses for a measly £12.95 for two courses at dinner from the Theatre Menu.  Zucca is a relaxed and stylish Italian restaurant whose chef has found a fine balance between classic favourite Italian dishes and creative new ones.  It’s a favourite with theatre-going diners who really rate the Theatre Menu.  In fact, the restaurant is one tiny tick away from Top Diner Rated status, so that lets you know you’re in for something good.

Michael Caines at ABode

Michael Caines at ABode is the fab Chester restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines of Gidleigh Park fame brought to the city’s landmark entertainment complex, and overlooking the Chester racecourse.  The deal is the unforgettably named Amazing Grazing Lunch offering three dishes for just £13.50 from a grazing menu of six main-ish dishes and three desserts. The menu features local, seasonal produce in inventive modern European dishes served beautifully.  As you can see, the dining room is modern and stylish, just right for weekday lunches as it’s a short walk from just about everywhere.

The Athenaeum

Zooming right back into the centre of London, The Athenaeum on Piccadilly overlooking Green Park is a smart, glamorous Mayfair restaurant with an unbeatable lunchtime offer: two courses for £14 including free bottled water, coffee and truffles. To be utterly truthful, the toptable website says the deal includes ‘trufles’ whatever they may be, but we’re placing our bet on ‘truffles’ as they come after coffee on the list.  Set in The Athenaeum Hotel, this restaurant is a terrific spot for lunch any day of the week.
Right over on the other side of London, The Blueprint Ca has one of the capital’s most breathtaking views over the River Thames and the Tower of London and the cityscape beyond.  How thoughtful of them to provide you with binoculars to play I Spy with while you enjoy the lunchtime deal of two courses and a glass of wine for £15 or the suppertime deal of two courses and a glass of wine for £17.  Fab chef Jeremy Lee uses the freshest of seasonal ingredients in his modern European cuisine that’s touched by inflections of his native Scotland.  Do book this one quickly, though, as it runs through the end of May.
